Industrial robots, classified by their mechanical structure, include SCARA robots, Cartesian robots, articulated robots, parallel robots, and others. Globally, the industrial robot market is dominated primarily by articulated robots. A robot consists of a controller, servo motors, and a reduction mechanism; among these, the three core components—reducers, servos, and controllers—account for 30% to 50%, 20% to 30%, and 10% to 20% of the robot’s total cost, respectively. The reducers most commonly used in industrial robots are RV reducers and harmonic reducers. But how do you determine which one to use?
Gear reducers are divided into harmonic gear reducers and RV gear reducers.
The RV reducer is ideal for use in heavy-duty robots, commonly applied to the three key joints of such robots: the leg, waist, and elbow. Compared to harmonic reducers, the RV reducer stands out due to its superior manufacturing and assembly processes. It offers higher fatigue strength, stiffness, and longer service life—features that prevent the significant loss of motion accuracy over time, a common issue with harmonic drives. However, the RV reducer does come with trade-offs: it’s heavier and has a larger physical footprint. Currently, the most widely used RV reducers on the market are supplied by Japanese company TAIYO, Taiwanese firm Murata, and several domestic brands, including Nantong Zhenkang, Zhejiang Hengfengtai, and Qinchuan Machine Tool, among others.
Harmonic reducers are used in both small and large robots, typically on the end-effector’s few axes. They are characterized by their compact size, lightweight design, high load-carrying capacity, exceptional motion accuracy, and a single-stage high reduction ratio. Internationally, HarmonicDrive Inc. virtually dominates the entire industrial robotics harmonic reducer market, currently holding an impressive 80% global market share. In China, Green Drive has emerged as the fastest-growing player in the industry, already supplying and testing its products with several domestic robot manufacturers—and even some foreign-invested robot companies. This year, Green Drive is poised to surpass 30,000 units produced, capturing over 60% of the domestic harmonic reducer market.
From the above, we can see that RV reducers are primarily used in heavy-duty robots, typically concentrated in the first few joint sections, while harmonic reducers are mainly employed in the final few axes of lightweight, compact industrial robots.
