Worm gear reducers can experience failures during operation. Here are some common causes of these issues along with troubleshooting methods:

1. Fever and excessive oil temperature

Overloading causes the gearbox to bear excessive load; improper selection of lubricant, or incorrect oil levels (too high or too low), can impair heat dissipation; excessively high ambient temperatures combined with poor cooling conditions further exacerbate the issue; and damage to the worm gear bearing increases friction, generating additional heat.

2. Excessive noise

Gear or worm gear wear leads to reduced meshing accuracy; bearing damage causes unstable operation; insufficient or degraded lubricant results in poor lubrication performance; and an unstable installation base triggers vibrations.

3. Oil Leak

Seals age and become damaged, losing their sealing effectiveness; uneven or contaminated mating surfaces on the housing lead to leaks; and excessively high oil levels cause lubricant to squeeze out through gaps.

4. Reduced transmission efficiency

Worm gear wear leads to increased surface roughness and higher friction losses; improper lubricant viscosity further boosts power dissipation; and inadequate assembly precision results in poor fit between transmission components.

5. Worm Gear and Worm Wear

Long-term overload or frequent start-stop operations subject the worm gear and worm to significant impact loads; poor-quality lubricant or failure to replace it promptly results in inadequate lubrication and protection; and harsh working conditions—such as the presence of dust and contaminants entering the gearbox—further accelerate wear and tear.

6. Output shaft rotates inflexibly or seizes up

The bearing is damaged, causing the output shaft to fail to rotate properly; the worm gear and worm have seized, likely due to inadequate lubrication, foreign objects entering the system, or improper assembly; additionally, the key on the output shaft is either damaged or excessively tight, hindering smooth rotation.
